March 4th 2021 - Review
Birdpen witnessed:
buildings, pressure, no release.
People
In a state created by the state
Of social mind, media and government
Observations of a world
beginning to lock itself in
before the world
locked itself down.
Words that paint pictures
of shaded greys
Lyrics lined with silver bullets.
A documentary of our time.
This precise time.
Blended music
Building waves of sonic tension,
Angular moments.
Pressure.
Released by rhythms.
Caressed by melodies
Crafted
Each song a chapter
An album as a book
Page turner
Thumbed by guitars, synths,
atmosphere and vocal reaches.
This isn’t bleak
There is optimism between the lines
Call it hope.
Holding up a mirror
To a world that we’ve created
One we can easily change
Take a look
Linger
With an ironic round of applause
for modern junk.
Dance your way
To dump the past.

Based on the English south coast, BirdPen mix elements of alternative guitar rock, experimental electronica and Krautrock with cinematic moods, all delivered with powerful and meaningful lyrics. They have released five studio albums to date.
Written, recorded and produced by the core group duo of Dave Pen (also singer and guitarist in Archive) and Mike Bird, and mastered by Frank Arkwright at Abbey Road Studios, ‘All Function One’ was written as the world was changing at the outset of the 2020 pandemic and is an album about isolation, digital sadness, loneliness, deep fakes, paranoia and living a modern cyber life.
